Des Plaines History
The Des Plaines suburb gradually emerged within the Des Plaines River Valley after the Treaty of Chicago in 1833, signed between American settlers and the Native tribes of the area. The prairielands gave way to farms through the 1850s, and the region was later identified as a valued parcel of land by speculators and railroad companies. The Des Plaines suburb was incorporated as a town in 1869, and then reincorporated as a village in 1873. Des Plaines grew steadily over the next century due to annexations of Riverview in 1925 and Orchard Place in 1956 as well as the construction of the nearby O’Hare airport. In recent years, Des Plaines has also become known regionally for its thriving Rivers Casino, one of only ten that have been licensed in the state of Illinois.
