Located approximately 25 miles north of Chicago, Deerfield was settled in 1835 by Horace Lamb and Jacob B. Cadwell. Formally known as Cadwell’s Corner, the area grew in population due to proximity to both the Chicago and Des Plaines Rivers. In 2007, Deerfield was ranked 3rd on Business Week’s 50 Best Places to Raise Children. Deerfield is home to the Caspar Ott Log House, the oldest standing building in Lake County.

When Lake County began forming its settlements into townships in 1849, the town was renamed Deerfield in part after the town of Deerfield in Massachusetts—the hometown of prominent settler John Millen—and due to the bountiful deer population in the area. The Deerfield suburb was incorporated in 1903, and has gradually grown into a thriving, family-centered community, named in 2007 by Business Week as #3 on a list of “50 Best Places to Raise Children.” Deerfield is also well-known as a center of business, maintaining headquarters for noted brands Walgreens, Baxter Healthcare, Cosi, and Takeda Pharmaceuticals.
