Home to some of the city’s best dining and world-famous architecture, River North has long been a destination for residents and visitors alike. Situated just across the Chicago River from the Loop, this vibrant neighborhood showcases the best of modern city living. From iconic shopping locales to the breathtaking views, River North is truly a location unlike any other. Located on the city’s near north side, this bustling neighborhood is known for its artistic focus—River North features some of the highest concentration of galleries in the Chicago area. The landmark Merchandise Mart houses some of the world’s most renowned design brands, and is the epicenter of the city’s business startup incubator 1871. With a focus on innovation and the arts, River North quickly became one of Chicago’s most in-demand neighborhoods. Foodies from all over flock to the area, which is home to some of the top culinary destinations in the country—enjoy a classic steakhouse menu at Kinzie Chophouse, the best of the sea at Shaw’s Crab House or homemade Italian dishes at Quartino Ristorante, the options are truly endless. River North is just minutes from Chicago’s premier shopping districts, including a short walk to the sights and sounds of the Magnificent Mile.
With the expansion of the railroad into Chicago's North Side in the 1800's came an influx of industrialization in the then largely Irish and Sicilian community. This section of town suffered from terrible industrial pollution, leading to its nickname 'Smokey Hollow.'
Following its industrial boom, River North went through a major transformation. In the wake of World War II, manufacturing slumped and many of the once-bustling factories were converted into dormant storerooms and warehouses. The result was a warehouse district that lasted until the 1970s, when the need for warehouses faded almost entirely. After the mass of storehouses and stockrooms were shut down, the neighborhood was left with a bunch of vacant buildings that were no longer useful.
Fortunately, the large, open layouts of the abandoned structures seemed a perfect fit for creative needs. The abundance of empty warehouse space drew artists, writers and architects to the area in search of studios and lofts. Today, River North maintains its status as an art center due to its population of artists and growing number of gallery showrooms. It's also growing its reputation as a food and nightlife mecca with its amazing restaurants and streets of new clubs and bars.
