You’re ready to rent a new home and can hardly wait to snag a set of keys from the landlord. But before you decide that this is the perfect abode, check out our quintessential checklist for Chicago renters—you should go through each of these items prior to signing a lease.
Renting is different from purchasing, obviously, and there is a lot less inherit risk involved, but in the end this is going to be your home for the next year. Don’t end up with a lemon because you didn’t practice your due diligence.
1) Turn on every light switch and appliance to ensure their functionality. We’re not suggesting that most landlords are trying to pull a fast one on you, but it’s always better to be protected and know what you’re getting before you move in.
2) Run the hot and cold water at every faucet and make sure the water pressure in the shower is satisfactory. It’s easier to address this with a potential landlord prior to move in rather than after.
3) Open and close all drawers and cabinets to ensure their functionality. Also, it’s important to check for water leaks and rodent infestations.
4) The bathroom is an important room in the house. Make sure there are no traces of mold, moisture or drainage issues. These can be extremely damaging issues that can lead to sickness.
5) Bring an IPod charger or cell phone charger to test the strength of the home’s outlets. Make sure you test them all.
6) Verify that there are functioning fire and carbon monoxide detectors throughout the unit.
7) Check all ceilings, walls and floors for any trace of water damage (look for staining/discoloration, floor buckling and/or paint blistering).
