As first time homebuyers, my husband and I had no idea what to expect and where to start. We contacted Dream Town Realty in response to one of their advertisements, and were immediately set up with Lynn Mendel. We couldn't have been more pleased with the experience. I am close to celebrating my one month anniversary in my new home. My own home. A vintage condo on a quiet street with a beautiful view and lots of amazing amenities. (Eat your hearts out, folks -- I have cutting boards built INTO my kitchen cabinet drawers!) Never in a million years would I have believed I could ever own my home. And I probably never would have, had I not had the good fortune of meeting real estate agent extraordinaire, Elizabeth Amidon. I wasn't even in the market for a home. But my friend Laurie decided to buy a condo, and she asked if I would go with her on her first outing to look at places. Elizabeth was her real estate agent. She had picked five places for Laurie to see. I tagged along. I immediately liked Elizabeth because she was so great at putting my friend Laurie at ease. There was no sense of pressure or impatience. No sense of urgency. Elizabeth helped shape this daunting task into a fun kind of treasure hunt. That is, until she had the NERVE to show Laurie a place I could afford. What the hell?! It was a cute two-bedroom ready-to-move-into condo on the North Side. I couldn't get it out of my mind. So a week later, I called Elizabeth with the idea that maybe I might be interested in buying a place. I thought for sure once she found out how much money I made ( a LOT less than Donald Trump), she'd laugh at me and hang up. She didn't. Instead, Elizabeth became very animated and even excited for me. I think she may have even been more excited than I was. So I made an appointment to look at a few places (the cute two-bedroom was sold by then), still not really believing I would ever go through with actually buying a place. But then I saw MY HOME. Quirky. Original. A curved wall. Hardwood floors. A hand-painted mural in the bathroom. I knew within ten minutes I wanted the place. But I still didn't really believe I could do it. What about taxes, what about something called Home Owner's Association fees, what about insurance, what about...? All of a sudden, I wasn't excited anymore. I was terrified. Elizabeth talked me off the ledge that day, explaining in terms even a five-year-old could understand what fees to expect, how much money I would need going in, how much money I would be paying each month and what kinds of responsibilities I needed to take on. But she didn't let it go at that: Elizabeth made sure I understood everything she said, and assured me I could ask her anything anytime. And I did. About 37 times. And she talked me off the ledge another eight or nine times before I signed my mortgage. See, with Elizabeth, it wasn't just that she was knowledgeable about real estate (and she is extremely knowledgeable) -- she understands how hard this commitment can be for someone -- especially someone like me, who has never owned a home before. I know I was not her most profitable client. Not by a longshot. I know she probably had several big deals to consider while working with me. Yet she always had time for me. Always answered my calls and messages promptly. She made me feel valued and respected -- like I was a big deal. I doubt very much I will ever move again. Why would I? Elizabeth helped me find MY HOME. But I can promise you this: If I ever did decide to move again, the first call I would make would be to Elizabeth. Sincerely,
