Welcome To Uptown

From the bustling and historic entertainment district to the picturesque lakefront, Chicago's Uptown neighborhood is buzzing with a variety of interesting shops, ethnic restaurants, exciting clubs and eclectic boutiques. Sharing its coveted Lake Michigan beaches with other communities along the water's edge, Uptown owns the market on island paradise-like sands and beautiful shoreline parkland. There is even a public skatepark where rollerbladers and skateboarders can practice their moves and share wipe-out stories with fellow Uptown skaters. Set back from the Lake Michigan shore are the sought-after residential blocks of stately, landmark mansions and vintage, courtyard condominiums. Uptown has its share modern lofts and rehabbed residences, too. Upgraded condo conversions and top-of-the-line finishes are standard in much of the real estate available today. But, if you prefer that antiquated charm, with a fixer-up feel -- the old, un-renovated buildings of Uptown will be right up your alley.

Then and Now

Originally part of the Edgewater neighborhood, the area now known as Uptown was developed as a summer playground for members of Chicago's elite class in the late 19th century, due in large part to its close proximity to Lake Michigan. But the area's desirable location soon began to attract permanent residents in addition to those looking for a warm weather getaway. In the early 1900s, all of the city's northbound trains traveling from downtown ended in the Uptown area, and the neighborhood became a popular entertainment destination.

Uptown was also the country's movie capital at one point. Between 1907 and 1918, Essany Studios (the historic building is still located on Argyle Street) made more than 2,000 silent movies. Charlie Chaplin, Gloria Swanson, Wallace Beery and Francis X. Bushman were frequent visitors at the studio. By 1918, though, the movie industry moved west, driven away by the often wintry Chicago weather to the sunny climate of Los Angeles.

Still, in the 1920s, Uptown was the city's fastest growing area. The neighborhood became independent of Edgewater due to a construction and economic boom, and was promoted as Chicago's version of New York City's Manhattan island -- packed with glitz, glamour and excitement. Even the street at Uptown's commercial center was crowned "Broadway."

Large apartments and hotels were erected to accommodate the growing influx of single adults. Often new to the city, they met up at the neighborhood's many bars, restaurants, dance halls and theaters. In fact, Uptown soon became the north side's leading retail and entertainment district with places like The Rainbo, a popular outdoor music garden, the Arcadia Ballroom and the 5100 Club, a hip comedy nightclub.

The entertainment district's popularity waned throughout the second half of 20th century, but over the past few years it has been experiencing a revival. New restaurants, bars and shops are opening every year, tucked in among the district's historic surviving members like the Aragon Ballroom and the Green Mill Lounge, which is famous for being a favorite spot of Al Capone.

Parks

If you subscribe to the belief that bottoms were made to be worked off instead of rested upon, or you're like us and just like the feel of the wind in your hair, the Uptown neighborhood offers an abundance of activities to keep us busy and our hair wind-blown (it is the Windy City after all).

A sprawling park and beach system extends along Lake Michigan making Uptown -- which borders Lake Michigan between Lawrence and Montrose Avenues -- an exceptional area to enjoy the best of Chicago's great outdoors. Biking and jogging paths, sand volleyball courts and hills for sledding during the snowy, winter months leave us with minimal excuses to be idle.

Speaking of snowy months, Chicago has a lot of them, but there are plenty of places to head indoors if you need a warm-up. Clarendon Park Community Center (4501 N. Clarendon Ave) features a gymnasium, boxing ring and fitness center where we can keep active despite what Mother Nature throws our way. The center also features programming options like after school sports, aerobics and preschool activities.

At Montrose Harbor (601 W. Montrose Dr, 312-742-7527) you can fish off the pier -- the Park District lends equipment free of charge in exchange for IDs -- or rent kayaks, paddleboats or canoes to cruise the lake. These are all available from the Chicago Park District's Rainbow Fleet program located nearby. When we feel like being beach bums, Montrose Beach (4400 N. Lake Shore Dr) is an ideal spot for a picnic with a view of the Chicago skyline and it accommodates swimmers, sunbathers and the occasional Frisbee throwers. There's also beach volleyball and tennis courts, soccer fields, baseball diamonds and a playlot for the kiddies.

Of course our four-legged friends enjoy a romp in the fresh air as much as our two-legged ones, and for them, there's The Susan Kimmelman Off-Leash Dog Beach located on the northwest corner of Montrose beach. Here dogs can run free and we can be content to watch or run alongside.

If it's a thrill we're seeking, we make tracks to Wilson Avenue Skatepark (Wilson Ave. at Lake Michigan). With varying skill areas for beginners through advanced, skaters can practice their extreme skills on urban elements like rails and curbs; the park also has "spines," "pyramids" and "bowls" if you're feeling particularly daring -- it's okay just to watch too.

Real Estate

An historic neighborhood, Uptown's tree-lined streets are filled with landmark mansions as well as condominiums and an array of homes fitting most styles and budgets. Uptown has become increasingly popular with young working adults and middle income families who want to live lakeside without paying the higher Near North Side prices.

In the 1900s, many of the mansions and apartment buildings were converted into affordable housing, upsetting their original charm and splendor. In an effort to beautify and salvage the heritage of this Chicago neighborhood, many of Uptown's buildings have since been renovated and restored to their original glory.

The neighborhood is continuing to grow alongside these renovations, as are the property values. Uptown real estate is made up of mid-rise courtyard condos, vintage apartment buildings, modern lofts and some single-family townhomes. The average sales price for a one-bedroom Uptown loft or condo is around $188,000, and closer to $300,000 for a two-bedroom place. For more space, you are looking at an average sales price in the mid- to upper $300,000s. And for something along the lines of a single-family detached home -- which are quite limited in this Chicago neighborhood -- the price tag will most likely read in the $800,000s, with several properties listed for a million dollars or more.

What's on the Menu?

Uptown's dining scene is a cornucopia of restaurants where we can fill our plates with an assortment of dishes -- from the traditional to the exotic.

Connoisseurs of the 24-hour neighborhood diner start their morning right with breakfast at the Golden House Restaurant and Pancake House (4744 N. Broadway St, 773-334-0406). Slide into the retro red vinyl booths and digest a menu lined with breakfast standards like eggs, pancakes, bacon and sausage. Later in the day, you can dig into heartier dishes such as hamburgers, pork chops, chicken fingers and grilled cheese. Another local favorite for early birds and night owls alike is Montrose Grill (1026 W. Montrose Ave, 773-525-5641). Like Golden House, this diner serves up breakfast dishes, entrees, sandwiches and coffee 24 hours a day.

Another place we go to find inner peace (and a delicious meal) is Marigold Indian Restaurant (4832 N. Broadway St, 773-293-4693). This modern Uptown eatery looks to India's unique and vibrant culture as inspiration for its food, atmosphere and attitude. Its distinctive menu incorporates the best of India's flavors and ingredients in authentic yet contemporary dishes like coriander-crusted halibut served on a bed of daal with pakora-style seasonal vegetables. The ocean's best is found at Agami Contemporary Sushi (4712 N. Broadway St, 773-506-1845). The aquarium-chic design -- think colorful, textured walls, seaweed sculptures and under-water video projections -- is trendy and fitting, and certainly sets the mood for your upcoming seafood delicacies. With a late night cocktail lounge and a menu that features maki, nigiri, sashimi and specialty entrees, Agami is our favorite Uptown spot for fresh fish.

Indulge in Mexican delicacies prepared in the traditional fashion at Fiesta Mexicana (4806 N. Broadway St, 773-769-4244). We like to order a pitcher of margaritas -- flavors range from strawberry and melon to banana and papaya -- to complement our pork burritos, empanadas, ceviche and oyster cocktail.

Argyle Street

Uptown is home to a large number of Asian restaurants, grocery stores and shops. Concentrated on Argyle Street from Sheridan Road to Broadway Street (and overflowing onto Broadway), these businesses form an area commonly referred to as Little Saigon or New Chinatown -- not to be confused with (old) Chinatown on the city's south side.

The area around Uptown's Argyle Street is so popular it pulls in crowds not only from the surrounding area but the surrounding states as well, and it is considered by many to be the Midwestern capital of Asian culture, selling everything from paper lanterns and pastries to fire pots and bubble tea.

So when it's a bowl of authentic pho that we're after, Argyle Street is where we head. It's chock-full of spots where we can slurp our fill of the traditional Vietnamese beef noodle soup in addition to loading up on other Vietnamese, Chinese and Thai favorites. One hotspot is Pho Xe Tang-Tank Restaurant (4953 N. Broadway St, 773-878-2253), known for several outstanding varieties of pho. When in doubt, go with the restaurant's namesake -- pho xe tang is an extra-large bowl of beef noodle soup with sliced beef, brisket, glank, softendon, bible tripe and a meatball. The casual space features several large tables, which come in handy considering the menu features nearly 300 dishes to try.

Sun Wah Bar-B-Q Restaurant (5041 N. Broadway, 773-769-1254) also has an extensive menu; it features more than 240 dishes of Asian-style barbeque, including some delicious varieties of roasted meat over rice. One note: You don't have to look at the barbequed duck hanging in the restaurant's front window, but it's actually the delicious house specialty and is worth a try. Another restaurant in Uptown worth mentioning is Hai Yen (1055 W. Argyle St, 773-561-4077). This Argyle gem is best known for its bo la lot, marinated ground beef grilled in a Hawaiian leaf. It's also known for letting diners in on the whole experience by encouraging them to cook at their own table over a fondue pot, soup pot or grill.

Dessert lovers make a sweet line straight to Thai Pastry & Restaurant (4925 N. Broadway St, 773-784-5399). While the lunch and dinner menus deserve a quick mention -- we like the red snapper with hot pepper or the seafood combination special -- let's face it, we're really here for the drool-worthy sweets like fruit shaped marzipan and Thai custard which are tantalizingly displayed in the glass pastry case.

If eating in is more appealing to you than dining out, there are plenty of grocery stores to pick up all the foodstuffs you need to create you own authentic meal. Tai Nam Food Market, Chicago's leading Asian food wholesaler and retailer, is one such place. It's located in Tai Nam Market (4925 N. Broadway St, 773-275-5666), a good-size Asian shopping emporium. Stores in this plaza include The Nail Superstore for all our nail, hair and skincare needs; Thoai Anh for jewelry, cosmetics and perfume; and Lan's Fashion for music and video sale and rental.

Best Shopping Stops

If you're shopping for something unique to spruce up your home decor, there are several spots in Uptown you should hit. Really Heavy Antiques (5142 N. Clark St, 773-784-7936) sells modernist furnishings from the 1930s through the 1970s, including lots of '50s and '60s designer furniture. Or make your way to Foursided (5061 N. Clark St, 773-506-8300), a custom picture-framing gallery, to dress up your walls with your favorite pics and prints. Marguerite Gardens (5059 N. Clark St, 773-506-6295) helps you greenify your space with its garden accessories, plants and flowers and at the Wooden Spoon (5047 N. Clark St, 773-293-3190) you can stock your kitchen cabinets and drawers with all the gourmet gadgets and gizmos you can handle.

Decorating your body is just as easy as decorating your place at the Tattoo Factory (4408 N. Broadway St, 773-989-4077), Uptown's resident tattoo parlor since 1976. The Factory has seen and done it all, whether you're expressing your love for Mother or showing your devotion to your pet snake. If you're not quite ready for ink, Hip Fit (1513 W. Foster Ave, 773-878-4447) specializes in fitting you in jeans instead of body art. The unisex boutique also carries bags, hats, jewelry and everything else you need to achieve that hip look from favorite designers like True Religion, Joes and Buffalo.

Ultra cool bookworms and music lovers enjoy Shake, Rattle & Read (4812 N. Broadway St, 773-334-5311). This book-slash-music store sells magazines and pulp novels from the 1950s and 1960s and obscure jazz and Rock 'n Roll records. When we're in the mood for more mainstream reads, we head to Borders (4718 N. Broadway St, 773-334-7338).

Night on the Town

Uptown's entertainment district was once the hottest destination in Chicago and the neighborhood is working to regain that reputation. With the help of some historic Uptown institutions and some new kids on the block, the neighborhood is bringing the crowds back.

The Uptown entertainment district is known for its numerous theaters, nightclubs and music venues including the famous Aragon Ballroom (1106 W. Lawrence Ave, 773-561-9500). One of the most famous dancehalls in the U.S., the Aragon was built in 1926 as an arena for big band performances. During its many musical and theatrical reincarnations, the Aragon has hosted larger-than-life names such as Frank Sinatra, Gloria Swanson and Charlie Chaplin. The Ballroom is currently a 4,500-seat concert hall and popular entertainment venue.

Around the corner from the Aragon is The Green Mill Lounge (4802 N. Broadway St, 773-878-5552), another Uptown classic. Once Al Capone's speakeasy, The Mill is now a cocktail lounge that hosts nightly jazz and it's a must-stop destination for world-class jazz musicians and jazz enthusiasts alike. Every Sunday night The Mill also hosts the famed Urban Poetry Slam, which jump-started the poetry slam revolution at its inception in 1987.

The Kinetic Playground (1113 W. Lawrence Ave, 773-769-5483) is one of the neighborhood's newer hotspots, a 500-seat entertainment space that hosts everything from blues to jazz, soul to rock and bluegrass to R&B. Another relative Uptown newbie, The Spot (4437 N. Broadway St, 773-728-8933) is sort of a jack of all entertainment trades: part comedy club, part live music lounge, part piano bar and part wine bar. No wonder they couldn't come up with a catchier name.

For those who are down for a night of drinking, there are a number of casual neighborhood pubs to choose from. Beer connoisseurs get their drink on at Hopleaf (5148 N. Clark St, 773-334-9851), a neighborhood favorite with more than 40 beers on tap and an international list that includes more than 150 bottles (many served in their brand glasses, a clever touch). Other places worth hanging at include Driftwood Inn (1021 W. Montrose Ave, 773-975-3900), The Uptown Lounge (1136 W. Lawrence Ave, 773-878-1136), Konak Pizza & Grill (5150 N. Clark St, 773-271-6688) and Nick's on Wilson (1140 W. Wilson Ave, 773-271-1155). These spots are loaded with extras like billiards and pool tables, darts, jukeboxes, and TVs in addition to the staple of drinks, drinks and more drinks.

As a testament to Uptown's commitment to diversity, a number of gay bars have popped up around the area as well. Two popular places are Clark's On Clark (5001 N. Clark St, 773-728-2373), a bar that has billiards and pool tables, darts, pinball and dance music on Friday and Saturday nights, and Crew Bar + Grill (4804 N. Broadway St, 773-784-2739), a sports-themed bar that also plays disco music and has a pub grub menu.

Mark Your Calendar

Just like its hip culture, much of Uptown's community fests and fun are tied to the fact that Truman College's campus is with the neighborhood borders. Offering two-year degrees, the college has more than 4,500 students enrolled yearly and many of the students who attend the college live in the area. This is reflected in the nearby crop of cafes, coffee houses and lounges that cater to a young college clientele. But Truman College really marks its presence in the community with the annual Uptown Summer Unity Festival. This July fest features live music, dancing, poetry, kids activities, a food court, a karate tournament, and health screenings, all for the bargain price of free! It's no doubt the festivities draw an eclectic crowd, but the cool thing is everyone's there for the same reason -- to have some summer fun!

In May, you and your dog can make new friends at Uptown's Bark in the Park, held at Montrose Harbor. This annual pet stroll and festival benefits the Anti-Cruelty Society and is a welcomed event for many a pet-lover. Whether your four-legged friend is a mighty Great Dane or a tiny Chihuahua, all sizes and breeds are represented -- and that goes for the owners as well. A great place to meet other neighbors who share your love of dogs, Bark in the Park is always a successful event that merits a mark on the calendar, so if you haven't already -- jot it down.

Getting Around

Getting around in Uptown is fairly easy. Walking is a great option as many of the neighborhood's stores, bars and restaurants are located next to each other on the main drags.

If you're driving, there's easy access to the expressway, including I-90/94 and U.S. Route 14. Parking can be a bit of a hassle though, as most of the spots are located on the street and they are metered spaces or permit parking spaces.

Chicago's public transportation system makes traveling around the neighborhood and the city quite easy. The CTA Red and Purple lines run though the neighborhood with stops at Argyle, Lawrence, Wilson and Sheridan, while the busses run on most major streets.
