Oakwood Hills
Then and Now
Oakwood Hills is a small bedroom community northwest of Chicago that got its start as a commuter town for people working in the city who wanted to live outside the hustle and bustle. Today, Oakwood Hills remains a quiet residential village with almost no industry or businesses operating within its limits. The nearby towns of Cary and Crystal Lake provide Oakwood Hills' 2,000+ inhabitants with most of their recreation and shopping needs.
Park is the Place
Oakwood Hills has two beaches on Silver Lake that are open to the public for summer swimming and picnicking. Although motorized boats are not allowed on the lake, rowboats, canoes and small sailboats can be seen leisurely crisscrossing the lake on most fair weather days. The activities don't stop when the lake freezes over, though, skating, ice fishing and cross-country skiing keep outdoor enthusiasts busy during the long winter months. Village Park is another local recreation spot that has 40 acres available for community athletics ranging from baseball to basketball to volleyball. Real adventurers will enjoy a hike on the nature trails that snake through Village Park's fen (a type of wetland), which is part to of the Illinois Nature Preserve.
Hit the Links
The suburb of Oakwood Hills can offer golfers a beautiful course at Chalet Hills Golf Club (943 Rawson Bridge Rd, 847-639-0666), which received a 4.5 star rating from Golf Digest. With plenty of trees and rolling hills, the course provides a good challenge for all levels of golfers and the scenic landscape is a tranquil retreat for anyone who appreciates the great outdoors.
Real Estate
Being a commuter community, one thing that Oakwood Hills can offer is peaceful residential subdivisions and a quiet family-friendly environment with plenty of space to raise children. Permanent residences and summer cottages are available in prices ranging from the low $100,000s to over a half million dollars. Single family houses ring around Silver Lake and occasionally go on the market, but because the suburb is so small, there are a limited number of homes for sale in the area.
