Barrington

Then and Now

Back in the 1830s, a group of pioneers from New England (mainly New York, Vermont and Massachusetts) ventured westward and came across a fertile plot of land about 35 miles northwest of Chicago. The area had an abundant water supply and good soil for farming. Word spread of the new agrarian settlement and the small community began to expand right away. A school was built in the 1840s that doubled as a house of worship. Not long after, the village instated a governing body and officially named the township Barrington.

By 1863, there were about 300 residents living in Barrington, which had grown to include a lumber mill, stores and a railroad station. Two years later the town incorporated and development continued steadily. As the bustling transportation and industry hub of Chicago got increasing congested, more and more people chose the more subdued life of the nearby villages like Barrington. The 20th century saw a shift in Barrington from a rural farming community to a scenic suburban society filled with big city workers who preferred the quiet home life of the Chicago countryside.

Today, there are roughly 10,000 inhabitants in Barrington, which has evolved into a thriving, self-reliant suburb with a healthy commercial economy and an active shopping and dining district. In order to preserve the village's historical feel and small town charm, Barrington residents have taken special care to integrate any 21st century advances with the community's existing local culture.

Park is the Place

The Barrington Park District manages a number of park locations and a variety of activities for all ages. In addition to the traditional park sites, which offer Barrington families convenient and safe places to enjoy the Great Outdoors, the Park District also provides residents with several options for participation in sports, fitness, fun and community groups. The indoor fitness center is great for keeping in shape year round. Members have full access to exercise machines, locker rooms, aerobic classes, and a lap pool. Scheduled programs (for adults and kids) expand the level of interest to team sports, art, dance, music, gymnastics, and ice skating - to name a few.

Summer is an active time for Barringtonites. The park playgrounds, picnic shelters, gardens, athletic fields, and nature trails are always popular once the weather gets warm and residents break out of winter hibernation. The manicured grounds, green grass and flourishing plant life are a welcome sight after months of snow and ice. When the temps start to rise Aqualusion, Barrington's public swimming pool and water slide park, also kicks into high gear to accommodate the throng of families with kids out of school for summer. Learning golfers can get a tee time on the Park District's five-hole learning course and get a lesson or two before heading out to the regulation links.

Barrington residents can also choose to forego the park facilities and organized programs and just take a walk around the nearby lakes to stretch the legs and get some fresh air. Wooded areas and waterfront landscapes provide a lovely spot to take a stroll and appreciate the simple beauty of an untouched environment.
