State Street in Chicago

State Street

Recognized as Chicago's original "Main Street," State Street went through extensive renovations in the mid-1990s that spurred a renewed interest in business, real estate, entertainment and tourism in the area. Since then, the historic corridor has maintained its reputation as one of Chicago's most visited streets.

Second only to Michigan Avenue, State Street is the Chicago shopper's sanctuary for name brand retail and deals on designer trends. Secondary branches of the Magnificent Mile's most popular stores make this a slightly less hectic locale for power shopping and bargain hunting. Macy's multi-level department store anchors the retail row which includes fashion favorites like H&M, Filene's Basement, Lerner New York, Forever 21, Nordstrom Rack, Urban Outfitters, Akira and T.J. Maxx.

State Street also hosts a few of the city's sought-after restaurants. During the holiday season, hordes of visitors descend upon Macy's for a chance to dine at the time-honored Walnut Room. Decked in festive trimmings and affording a close-up view of the biggest indoor Christmas tree around, the Walnut Room offers a traditional holiday meal perfect for the family set. Across the way, Atwood Café is an always-active breakfast, lunch and dinner place that serves up contemporary international dishes with a sophisticated twist. Floor-to-ceiling windows, dark red drapes, white tablecloths and attractive chandeliers give Atwood Café a casual elegance that suits any occasion, from business lunches to an anniversary celebration.

The regular traffic along State Street generally consists of office workers, retail shoppers, college students and folks getting a bite to eat. But there's one day of the year that draws major crowds from all over Chicago (and beyond) to the center of the city for a spectacle to beat all others - the Thanksgiving Day Parade! Folks line the avenue to catch a glimpse of the giant floating balloon characters, troops of marching bands and other customary participants. But, don't fret if you can't make it downtown for the event. You can always watch the show on television whiling prepping that bird for dinner.
