The "Magnificent Mile" has become a landmark of Chicago's consumer culture. Many of the country's top names in retail have stores along the "Mile". This includes Tiffany & Co., Sax Fifth Avenue, Cartier, Niketown, and Bloomingdale's. The whole area has over 450 stores with a total retail space covering more that 3,000,000 square feet. The sidewalks are never empty as there is much more than shopping along the "Magnificent Mile." There are around 300 restaurants and contains notable such buildings like the Drake Hotel, John Hancock Center, and the Tribune Tower. The entire area covers just eight blocks.
If you're looking to stay near the Magnificant Mile during a visit to Chicago, there are over 50 hotels in the area to house visitors. The street is lined with trees and has additional greenery to add to its appeal. During the holiday season the trees that run the length of the street are covered with lights. It is also not uncommon to see carriages pulled by horses coming down the street. There are numerous ways to travel to and around the Magnificent Mile. There are a few CTA train stations in the area as well as CTA bus routes. There is always traffic on this street and taxis are always around.
The history of the Magnificent Mile is long and rich. The area first gained popularity in the late 1860's with the construction of the Water Tower and Pumping Station. It was one of the few buildings to survive the Great Chicago Fire. People used it as a symbol of re-growth after the fire. Pretty much since then, the area has grown and continues to grow with new business and restaurants.
A trip to Chicago truly isn't complete until you've shopped on the "Magnificent Mile!"
